CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia men’s soccer team topped East Tennessee State, 1-0, in exhibition action Monday morning at Klöckner Stadium. The match was moved to Monday after severe weather prompted the Sunday match to be stopped in the 38th minute.

The teams scrapped the Sunday match and played a new game Monday, with a 30-minute first half and 45-minute second half.

Virginia scored the match’s lone goal in the 10th minute. Freshman Chris Somerville dribbled the ball down the left side to the ETSU goal line, where he chipped it to the front of the goal and found a wide open Ari Dimas, who knocked it home.

Both teams had scoring chances the rest of the way. UVa freshman Kyle McCord hit the post in the 89th minute on his scoring attempt.

Each team recorded three shots on goal. UVa finished with 13 shots, while ETSU had eight. UVa also held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.

Ranked 22nd in the preseason NSCAA poll, the Cavaliers will play their final exhibition at 5 p.m. Friday (Aug. 19) against George Mason. UVa kicks off its regular season Aug. 26 against West Virginia in Germantown, Md.
