SHENZHEN, China – Former Cavalier swimmer Matt McLean anchored the United States 4×200 freestyle relay team to a gold medal Tuesday at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China.

McLean recorded the fastest 200-meter split of any swimmer with a time of 1:47.24. The United States won the race in 7:13.54; Japan took silver in 7:14.66 and Australia took bronze in 7:17.58.

Former Cavalier Katya Bachrouche, a classmate of McLean’s in the graduating class of 2011, finaled in the 400-meter freestyle. She placed seventh overall with a lifetime best mark of 4:15.06 while representing Lebanon.

Rising senior David Karasek, swimming for his native Switzerland, was 17th overall in the 100-meter freestyle (50.85). He also led off Switzerland’s ninth-place 4×200 relay squad that finished in 7:31.70. Karasek recorded a split of 1:49.54.

Swimming events at the World University Games continue through Friday.
