Members of the Virginia women’s basketball program have been checking in this summer with VirginiaSports.com to give a first-hand update on the team. In this installment, assistant coach Katie O’Connor blogs on Aug. 18, 2011.

Greetings ‘Hoo Fans!

Wow! The last few months have been a WHIRLWIND! Shortly after Coach Boyle was hired in April, I was lucky enough to be named an assistant coach here at UVa. Even though I graduated from Virginia Tech and WAS a Hokie (it’s not about where you start, but more about where you finish), I was so very excited to be here in Charlottesville. It is such an honor to be part of a program with such a storied history.

I find something new in Charlottesville to like every day! The Grounds, John Paul Jones Arena, The Downtown Mall, The Corner … I could go on and on. It truly is a special place to earn a degree and play high-level basketball. Our staff spent the month of July traveling the country recruiting and watching future Cavaliers … we love being able to watch all that talent!

It is such an exciting time in the program. Next week we begin our first workouts on the court. I am really excited to begin working with the players. They have had what I feel like has been a great summer. Coach Mike Curtis [head strength and conditioning coach for men’s and women’s basketball] has really put them to work. Just check out Ataira Franklin’s blog about it! There is anticipation and excitement in the air already for the 2011-2012 season.

Hope everyone has had a great summer. Season tickets on sale soon! Don’t forget to buy yours! We can’t wait to see you in the seats!
