CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia volleyball team will host its fourth-annual Orange-Blue Scrimmage Saturday (Aug. 20) at Memorial Gymnasium. The action begins at 3 p.m., and admission is free.

Following the scrimmage, the volleyball team will be available for an autograph session. Additionally, there is a free clinic for those youth in the eighth grade and younger. Drills will be performed with the coaching staff and current players on the main court of Mem Gym.

For the scrimmage, the squad will break into two teams and compete in a match-like format. Rather than playing a typical “best of five” match, the team will play five sets regardless of the outcome of the first four sets. The match will be played in traditional scoring format, with the first four sets being played to 25 points and the fifth to 15. A team must win by two points.

UVa returns 10 letterwinners from the 2010 season, including the Cavaliers’ leader in kills and aces from a season ago, senior outside hitter Simone Asque. She finished the season ranked third in the ACC with 3.77 kills per set and second with an average of 0.32 aces per set. Her season total of 419 kills pushed her career total to 1,038, making her the 15th Cavalier to reach 1,000 career kills.

Also returning for Virginia is junior Jessica O’Shoney, who led UVa in hitting percentage and blocks last season. She was an All-East Region honorable mention selection.

Four newcomers join the squad in freshmen Morgan Blair, Tori Janowski, Sydney Shelton and Abbey Welborn.

The Cavaliers begin the 2011 campaign with back-to-back tournaments in Mem Gym. The Marriott Cavalier Classic (Aug. 26-27) features Western Michigan, USC Upstate and Western Carolina, while the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup (Sept. 2-3) features East Carolina, California and Long Island.
