Erin, WI – Virginia freshman Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and recent graduate Will Collins (Salisbury, N.C.) advanced through 36 holes of stroke play to reach the match play portion of the 2011 U.S. Amateur Championships taking place in Erin, Wisc.

McCarthy shot 4-under 66 on Wednesday at the Blue Mound Course for a two-round total of 139. Collins also tied for 19th at 139. He had rounds of 72 and 67.

UVa seniors Ben Kohles and Bruce Woodall failed to advance. Kohles finished 96th at 144 and Woodall was 202nd at 149. The cut for match play was 142.

McCarthy, seeded 23rd in match play, was scheduled to face Tim Madigan of Rio Rancho, N.M., in the first round of match play that was scheduled to start Wednesday afternoon. Madigan was 2-up after three holes when play was stopped Wednesday.

Collins, seeded 22nd, was paired up against Wake Forest’s Lee Bedford in his opening round match that will begin Thursday.
