Virginia Sweeps ECU, 3-0, To Open Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia volleyball team swept East Carolina, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19), to open competition at the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup Friday (Sept. 2) at Memorial Gymnasium.
Virginia improved to 3-1 on the season while ECU’s record went to 1-1. The tournament continues Friday evening when the Pirates take on Long Island at 5 p.m., followed by Virginia vs. No. 1 California at 7 p.m.
The Cavaliers used an efficient offense and senior Simone Asque (17 kills), freshman Tori Janowski (13 kills) and junior Jessica O’Shoney (11 kills) led the charge.
Asque moved into the top-10 in Virginia’s record books for career kills, as she needed two before today’s match to crack the list. For her career, Asque has totaled 1,088 kills and is now 23 kills away from surpassing No. 9 on the list, Shannon Davis (1,111).
UVa hit .342 for the match and junior setter Beth Wildermuth dished out a season-high 42 assists. Wildermuth added 10 digs for the double-double. UVa libero Emily Rottman tallied 23 digs.
ECU’s Britney Roper led all Pirates with eight kills.
In the second match of the afternoon session, No. 1 California swept Long Island, 3-0.
The Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup continues this evening at Memorial Gymnasium. Long Island and East Carolina play at 5 p.m., prior to the 7 p.m. Virginia-Cal match.
