CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia volleyball team closed out action at the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup with a 3-0 (25-22, 26-24, 25-19) win over Long Island on Saturday (Sept. 3) at Memorial Gymnasium.

Virginia improved to 4-2 on the season and wrapped up the tournament with a 2-1 record. Long Island’s record went to 1-5 on the season.

Senior outside hitter Simone Asque (Chicago, Ill.) and junior Tobi Farrar (Arlington, Texas) were Virginia’s representatives on the all-tournament team. Against the Blackbirds, Asque finished with 11 kills, five digs and four aces, while Farrar contributed seven kills and three blocks.

Top-ranked California closed out the tournament with a 3-0 win over ECU in Saturday’s first game. Golden Bears Tarah Murrey, Correy Johnson were named to the all-tournament team and Adrienne Gehan was the Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup’s Most Valuable Player.

The first set vs. LIU featured eight ties and four lead changes before the final tie at 21-21. Virginia closed out the set with four points, including the game-winning kill from junior Beth Wildermuth (San Clemente, Calif.) to earn the 25-22 win.

Similarly in the second set, the score was tied late at 22 all but the Cavaliers rallied to come up with the 26-24 victory.

The third set was all Cavaliers, as UVa built an early lead and finished the match out by a score of 25-19.

Wildermuth had 10 digs in addition to her 28 assists, while freshman Tori Janowski contributed eight kills and two aces.

The Blackbirds were led by Hanna Gibeau’s 13 kills and Vera Djuric’s 32 assists and four digs.

Virginia is back in action next weekend when the Cavaliers travel to Athens, Ohio, for the Ohio Volleyball Tournament. UVa’s opponents are Marshall (Sept. 9), Louisville (Sept. 10) and the host Bobcats (Sept. 11).
