Cavalier Women Record Perfect Score at Lou Onesty Open

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Led by an individual victory by senior Anna Corrigan, the No. 17 Virginia women’s cross country team won its season opening meet – the annual Lou Onesty Open – Friday evening at Panorama Farms, while the men’s team – ranked 19th nationally – finished second overall.

With a perfect score of 15 points, the Cavalier women tied a meet record and outdistanced second-place Ohio Northern for the title, as the Polar Bears finished with 58 points. The UVa women also scored a perfect 15 points in the 2010 Lou Onesty Open. On the men’s side, Georgetown won the title with 20 points, while the Cavaliers finished runner-up with 72 points. Norfolk State’s Josef Tessema won the men’s title for the second year in a row with a time of 25:00.70. Tessema nearly mirrored his winning time from 2010, 25:02.25.

Corrigan led seven Cavaliers across the line as the top-seven finishers, completing the 5k course in a time of 18:04.50. Sophomore Kathleen Stevens finished second in 18:13.00, while junior Barbara Strehler took third in 18:13.20 and sophomore Chelsea Ley was fourth in 18:13.40. Senior Rosemary Barber placed fifth at 18:29.50 and senior Chelsea France was sixth at 18:38.40. Junior Lauren Zarger rounded out the scoring Cavaliers, finishing seventh in 18:48.80.

On the men’s side, junior David Wilson was Virginia’s top finisher, taking 13th place with a time of 26:20.60. Sophomore Thomas Porter finished in 14th place at 26:26.70, while senior Sintayehu Taye placed 17th at 26:33.00. Junior Bryan Lewis finished 23rd at 27:01.30 and sophomore Anthony Kostelac rounded out the top UVa scorers in 36th place at 27:36.80.

Up next, Virginia will head to Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., on Friday, Sept. 30 for the Paul Short Invitational.
