ATHENS, Ohio – The Virginia volleyball team defeated Marshall, 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-18), to win its road opener and improve to 5-2 on the season. UVa is competing at Ohio University’s tournament and has two more contests at the event this weekend.

Simone Asque and Rachel Clark led the ‘Hoos offensively with 16 and 13 kills, respectively. Asque hit .519 for the match, committing just two errors on her 27 attempts.

Asque took over sole possession of ninth place on UVa’s all-time list for career kills. She now has 1,123 kills for her career and the eighth spot, held by Lindsay Osco, is 192 kills away.

Clark, meanwhile, turned in a double-double performance with 10 digs in addition to her 13 kills.

Emily Rottman finished with 13 digs, while Tobi Farrar contributed six kills, nine digs and four blocks.

Laura Der led the Thundering Herd (1-5) with seven kills and 14 digs.

The first set was tied early at 9-9 before UVa went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-9 lead on a kill by Asque. The Cavaliers cruised from there and a kill by Jessica O’Shoney at match point gave UVa the 25-18 victory.

In the second set, Virginia got off to a hot start, taking a 9-3 lead early on a kill by O’Shoney. Marshall was able to close the gap to four points at 22-18, but Virginia closed out strong and came away with a 25-20 win.

To clinch the match, Virginia battled back from an early 6-3 deficit to tie the game at 10-10 and reel off three-consecutive points to take a 13-10 lead and prompt a Marshall timeout. The Thundering Herd did not get closer than one point down the stretch and UVa got its fifth win of year with a 25-18 win in the third and final set.

Virginia held a 7-5 advantage in blocks and out-hit Marshall, .306 to .140, for the match.

The Cavaliers continue action at Ohio’s tournament Saturday (Sept. 10) with an 11 a.m. match vs. BIG EAST foe Louisville. Live statistics will be available at VirginiaSports.com.
