EVANSTON, Ill. – The No. 18 Virginia field hockey team (4-4) fell in overtime to No. 11 California 4-3 Saturday in a neutral site game in Evanston, Ill. Freshman Rachel Sumfest scored twice in the loss while sophomore Elly Buckley also notched a goal.

The Golden Bears registered the game-winner in the second minute of overtime. Lara Kruggel scored the goal from about 12 yards out. It was the first overtime game of the season for Virginia.

Cal outshot Virginia 9-8 for the game and had an 8-5 advantage on penalty corners.

California went up 1-0 in the fifth minute on a Kendra Billis goal, but the Cavaliers bounced back to tie the game in the 24th minute when Buckley took advantage of a Cal turnover and beat goalkeeper Maddie Hand once she came out of the cage.

Sumfest then notched her first of two goals on the day to give Virginia a 2-1 lead. She scored in the final minute of the first half.

The Golden Bears tied the game for the second time in the 57th minute when Kruggel scored her first of two goals. The game continued its back-and-forth pace when the Cavaliers went up again on Sumfest’s second score in the 67th minute.

Nearing the one-minute mark to play in regulation, California tied the game once more when Andrea Earle scored at 69:18 to send the game into overtime, where Kruggel notched the game winner.

Hand finished with four saves in the cage while the Bears also registered a defensive save. Virginia freshman Jenny Johnston tallied one save.

The Cavaliers conclude play in Illinois with a 2 p.m. game Sunday against Northwestern.
