CHARLOTTESVILLE – By virtue of a team grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0, the Virginia women’s lacrosse team earned Academic Squad honors for the 2011 season from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

Additionally, class of 2011 graduate Marghi Walters and rising senior Josie Owen were named to the IWLCA’s Division I Academic Honor Roll. The duo was part of the 176 student-athletes recognized by the organization for their work in the classroom.

Walters wrapped up her Cavalier career with 17 starts in 18 appearances last season. The Wyndmoor, Pa., native tallied 16 ground balls and five caused turnovers. A defender and two-time team captain (2010-11), Walters graduated with a degree in sociology.

Owen returns for her senior season after scoring 40 goals and adding 16 assists in 2011, including a goal in every regular-season game. The attacker from Gibson Island, Md., had multiple points in all but one game and multiple goals on 11 occasions, including recording seven hat tricks. She also led the team in draw controls with 43. A history major, Owen also earned a spot on the 2011 All-ACC Academic Women’s Lacrosse Team in June.

The Cavaliers continue their fall ball season with a Wednesday (Sept. 28) scrimmage against William & Mary at the University Hall turf field. It is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
