LOS ANGELES – Two members of the Virginia women’s tennis team began play Saturday at the ITA All-American Championships as pre-qualifying started at UCLA. Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) won two matches on the first day and are one win away from reaching the qualifying draw.

Fuccillo scored a first round upset of eighth-seeded Carling Seguso of UCLA, 6-2, 6-2. She followed that win with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Misia Krawoski of Brown in the second round. She will play Hanna Mar of Duke in the final round of pre-qualifying.

Xi topped Nitooli Wilkins of UNC Greensboro 6-3, 6-2 in the first round before upsetting fourth-seeded Jordaan Sanford of Baylor 6-2, 6-2 in the second round. She will play Zoe Scandalis of USC in the final round of pre-qualifying.

Fuccillo and Xi are looking to join three other Cavaliers in the qualifying draw. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.), Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton Fla.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) were selected to the qualifying draw based on their ranking. Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) was selected to the main draw.

At the Wake Forest Invitational, four other Cavaliers continued play. Marjorie Baker (Washington, D.C.) highlighted the day as she reached the Flight C final.
