LOS ANGELES – Five members of the Virginia women’s tennis team were in action Tuesday as play began in the qualifying draws of the ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Country Club. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) advanced to the second round of singles, while the team of Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) reached the second round of doubles.

Fraser, the No. 12 seed in qualifying singles, rallied for a 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 win over Mary Weatherholt of Nebraska. She will play Courtney Dolehide of UCLA in the second round on Wednesday. The other three Cavaliers in the draw, Fuccillo, Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) lost in the first round.

In doubles, the team of Fuccillo and Xi defeated Jessica Harrow and Misia Krasowski of Brown 8-6. They will meet Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC, the No. 3 seed in the draw, in the second round.

Players need to win three matches in qualifying to reach the main draw, which begins on Thursday. Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) was selected to the main draw on the basis of her ranking, as were the doubles teams of Hardenbergh/Vierra and Fraser/Tomljanovic.
