CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia rowing seniors Sarah Borchelt (Sterling, Mass.) and Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.) have been picked to be co-captains by their teammates for the 2011-12 season, head coach Kevin Sauer announced Friday (Oct. 7).

“Both Sarah and Martie are well respected by their teammates,” Sauer said. “They both work very hard and have a great attitude and that in turn makes them great leaders.”

Both Borchelt and Kuzzy served as tri-captains along with Claudia Blandford in 2010-11 and were a part of the Varsity Eight that won its petite final at the 2011 NCAA Championships to finish seventh overall.

Borchelt was named the 2011 ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was honored on the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team. She was recognized as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete for the second consecutive year in 2011 and was named to the 2011 Academic All-State Team by the Virginia Sports Information Directors.

Kuzzy was named to the All-ACC team following the Cavaliers’ 11th conference crown and was listed on the CRCA All-South Region squad. The 2009 ACC Rookie of the Year competed for the United States at the 2011 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in Amsterdam.

The Cavaliers begin their fall schedule Oct. 23 at the Head of the Charles in Boston.
