Will Bates’ goal in the 84th minute lifted Virginia to a 2-1 triumph over No. 2 Maryland Friday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Virginia handed the Terrapins their first loss of the season. Bates and freshman Ryan Zinkhan combined for each of the Cavaliers’ scores. Bates assisted on Zinkhan’s goal in the 51st minute, and Zinkhan’s layoff near the top of the box led to Bates’ game-winning score, his team-leading 10th tally of the year.

UVa became just the second team this year to score more than one goal against the Terrapins’ defense. UM had allowed just eight goals in 12 games entering Friday.

Bates now has 10 goals this year – third in the ACC. He trails Duke’s Andrew Wenger (15 goals) and Maryland’s Casey Townsend (12). Three of Bates’ goals are game winners. With four assists this year as well, Bates owns 24 points, which is tied with Townsend for second in the conference. Bates also is tied for seventh in the ACC in assists.

The win also pushed UVa among the leaders atop the ACC. North Carolina (3-1-1) and Duke (3-1-1) lead the ACC with 10 points, while Virginia (3-1-0) and Maryland (3-1-0) are a point behind, although both the Wahoos and Terrapins have a game in hand on the co-leaders.

UVa has had a strong freshman presence this year, but the Maryland game marked the first time this year that all five seniors on the roster started in the same match (Hunter Jumper, Felipe Libreros, Greg Monaco, Brian Ownby, Mike Volk). It was just the second time this year that the five seniors had even played in the same game (Charlotte).

Navy has dominated the all-time series, winning 10 of the 13 prior meetings, although the programs have played just one time over the last 32 years. They have not met since the 1995 season, when UVa claimed a 7-5 win at Klöckner Stadium. Prior to the 1995 contest, the programs had not played since 1977, a 1-0 Navy win in Annapolis.

The Midshipmen hold a 4-5-3 season record and 1-1-1 mark in the Patriot League coming into the non-conference tilt this evening. David Jackson leads the team in scoring with four goals, while Nick Dubee has three goals. Aaron Dupere has earned most of the playing time in goal, with a 4-4-3 record, 1.58 GAA and a pair of shutouts to his credit. The Mids are coming off a 3-2 loss Saturday to Bucknell in Annapolis, Md. Jackson and Dubee accounted for Navy’s scores.

UVa travels to Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday in its next ACC action. The Cavaliers return home next Tuesday (Oct. 18) to face Howard in a 7 p.m. clash.
