CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The No. 18 Virginia men’s soccer team earned its third straight win with a 2-0 victory over Navy Tuesday evening at Klöckner Stadium. Ryan Zinkhan (Fr., Fredericksburg, Va.) scored in his third straight game, while Brian Ownby (Sr., Glen Allen, Va.) also recorded a goal for Virginia (8-4-0).
Spencer LaCivita (Fr., Raleigh, N.C.) made four saves for Virginia while recording his fourth shutout. Navy (4-6-3) used two goalkeepers; Aaron Dupere made three saves and allowed a pair of goals in the first half, and Max Renaldo played the second half and did not record a save.
UVa out-shot Navy, 12-9, but held a 10-1 edge during a dominating first half. The Cavaliers also held a 5-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Virginia struck quickly for the game’s first score. Hunter Jumper (Sr., Plano, Texas) lofted a corner kick toward the near post, and Ownby came barreling in to head it home from a couple of yards out. It marked Ownby’s third goal this season, while Jumper notched his first assist of the year.
The Cavaliers used a freshman combination to get their second goal in the 33rd minute. After Kyler Sullivan (Stafford, Va.) made a great run down the right flank, he moved into the top corner of the box, then sent a ball to Zinkhan, who ripped a shot from the center of the box past Dupere. It marked Zinkhan’s third score of the year and the third straight game in which he has scored.
UVa travels to Wake Forest at 7 p.m. Friday in its next ACC action. The Cavaliers return home next Tuesday (Oct. 18) to face Howard in a 7 p.m. clash.
