Jonesborough, TN – The seventh-ranked Virginia men’s golf team is in second place following the opening round of play at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate @ Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. The Cavaliers shot 7-over 295 and trail NC State by eight strokes. UVa won the tournament last fall.

Freshman Denny McCarthy led UVa with a 1-under 71 and is tied for third place. Ben Rusch, who tied for second at the tournament last year, is in fifth place at 72. Bruce Woodall is ninth at 73, Ben Kohles is 55th at 79 and Mac McLaughlin is 74th at 82. Cory Siegfried, playing as an individual, is 41st at 77.

NC State’s Mark McMillen leads the field at 4-under 68.
