Rowing Announces Spring 2012 Schedule

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia rowing team and head coach Kevin Sauer announced the 2012 schedule Friday (Oct. 14). The ‘Hoos will compete on eight different weekends in the spring.

The Cavaliers will open the season with a scrimmage with Michigan State in Marion, Va., on March 10 before participating in the Oak Ridge Invitational the weekend of March 17-18 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Squads from Alabama, Buffalo, Duke, Kansas, Louisville, Notre Dame, Minnesota and Tennessee will be involved.

Two weeks later, Virginia travels to San Diego, Calif., March 31-April 1 for the San Diego Crew Classic and its only West Coast trip of the campaign.

The weekend of April 14-15 will feature the UVa Invitational, the ‘Hoos’ lone host weekend. Boats from Michigan State, Notre Dame, Clemson, Pennsylvania, Cornell, Northeastern, San Diego and Minnesota will descend upon Lake Monticello in Virginia’s final tune-up for the ACC Championships, which will be held in Clemson, S.C., on April 21.

The Cavaliers will travel to Columbus, Ohio the following Saturday (April 28) to face off against Michigan and the host Buckeyes.

The Eastern Sprints, where UVa will face the likes of Boston University, Boston College, UMass, Navy, Northeastern, George Washington, Rhode Island, Holy Cross, Bucknell and MIT, will serve as the penultimate competition for the Cavaliers on May 13 in Camden, N.J., while the 2012 NCAA Championships will be held in Mercer Lake, N.J., Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27).

The ‘Hoos, who won their 11th ACC Championship and finished sixth at the NCAA Championships in 2011, begin their fall schedule with the Head of the Charles in Boston on Oct. 23.
