Jonesborough, TN – The seventh-ranked Virginia men’s golf team placed second at the 15-team Bank of Tennessee @ Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn. The Cavaliers managed to overtake NC State, which led the field after 36 holes by three shots, but Kent State used a final round score of 10-under to leap frog UVa for the title. The Golden Flashes finished at 5-over 869 while the Cavaliers were the runners up at 12-over 876.

Virginia, which shot 2-over 290 during the third round, finished ahead of four other ACC schools in the field.

The Cavaliers were led by the top-10 finishes of freshman Denny McCarthy and senior Ben Kohles. McCarthy shot 3-over 75 Sunday to tie for sixth at 2-over 218. Kohles fired 2-under 70 for the second consecutive day to move up to 10th at 3-over 219. It was the 19th top-10 finish of Kohles’ career, which ranks third among all UVa players.

Bruce Woodall was 18th at 221 including a 72 Sunday. Mac McLaughlin posted a final round 73 to improve to 43rd at 228. Ben Rusch shot 77 during the final round but did not have a finishing place. He had his second round score disqualified because he signed the wrong score card. Cory Siegfried, playing as an individual, was 67th at 237.

Missouri’s Jace Long and NC State’s Mark McMillen tied for first at 2-under 214.

The Cavaliers travel to Atlanta Oct. 23-25 to play at the U.S. Collegiate in their next outing.
