Virginia Knocks Off Tribe, 4-3

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Virginia field hockey team (7-10) knocked off cross-state rival William & Mary 4-3 Monday at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va. Sophomore Elly Buckley registered two goals in the win while junior Britt Knouse and freshman Jess Orrett also tallied scores.
“Both teams came to play,” Virginia head coach Michele Madison said. “It was a fast- paced, heavy-attacking type of game with a lot of scoring opportunities for both teams. We showed a lot of character tonight and I am really proud of our determination.”
The Cavaliers outshot William & Mary 17-15 for the game, including an 11-5 advantage in the second half. Both teams finished with five penalty corners.
Buckley notched her first score of the game in the fifth minute with an unassisted shot to the far post to give the Cavaliers a 1-0 lead. Buckley then made it 2-0 in the 19th minute when she rifled in a shot on a dish from senior Rachel Jennings. Buckley’s 15 goals on the season lead the UVa offense.
The Tribe (6-8) rallied back for two quick goals to tie the game. Emma Clifton intercepted a free hit at the top of the circle and put it in to cut Virginia’s lead to 2-1 in the 27th minute. Then in the 30th minute, Ashley Kyle scored on the near post to tie the game 2-2. The game remained knotted at halftime.
Knouse put the Cavaliers back in front in the 49th minute when she deflected in a pass from senior Alex Jahnle on a broken penalty corner. Orrett’s unassisted goal from five yards out in the 62nd minute gave Virginia a 4-2 advantage.
William & Mary kept up the offensive pressure and was able to cut the lead once again to a one-goal game in the 67th minute. Leah Zamesnik was credited with the goal on the penalty corner. The Tribe was able to draw a penalty corner with 30 seconds to play in the game for a chance to tie the game, but the Virginia defense prevailed.
Virginia’s freshman goalkeeper Jenny Johnstone finished with six saves in the cage. Camilla Hill also recorded six stops for William & Mary.
The Cavaliers return to conference play at Wake Forest Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Winston-Salem, N.C.
