Former Cavalier Kok Earns Silver at Pan American Games

GUZMAN, Mexico-Melanie Kok, a former Virginia rower, and Josh Gautreau, UVa rowing’s operations assistant, recently competed at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guzman, Mexico.
Rowing with Canada’s women’s quadruple skulls, Kok earned a silver medal, finishing in a time of 6:37.68. This is the fourth medal Kok has earned for her home nation. She won bronze in the women’s lightweight doubles at the 2008 Beijing Olympics and has two World Rowing Championships medals: a gold in 2005 in the lightweight quadruple skulls and a bronze in 2007 in the lightweight single skulls.
Gautreau, who is in his first year at UVa, helped the United States win the “B” final in the men’s lightweight coxless fours in a time of 6:18.82 to place seventh overall.
The UVa rowing squad opens its 2011 fall schedule with the Head of the Charles on Sunday (Oct. 23) in Boston.
