Q&A with Anna Corrigan

Cross Country/Track and Field senior Anna Corrigan recently spoke with VirginiaSports.com to talk about this past Friday’s (Oct. 14) Panorama Farms Invitational and the upcoming ACC Championships, which will be held Oct. 29 in Clemson, S.C.

Question: What did you think of your performance at last Friday’s Panorama Farms Invitational and the conditions of the course after it had rained the previous two days?
Corrigan: I thought it was pretty good for us overall. The course was pretty muddy, but that made it fun and I think as a team, we ran really well together. We did a good job of sticking together and moving up through the race.

Question: During the race, an interesting twist occurred where you lost one of your shoes. What happened and how did it affect your performance?
Corrigan: It was not even halfway in the race where you go down a really steep downhill. It was kind of muddy on the way down, but there was a lot of mud at the bottom of the hill and I hit a bad spot in the mud and it sucked the back of my shoe off. I ran a couple of steps with it half-on and half-off, but it wasn’t working so I had to fling it off. I tried to not let it change the way I ran, except I had to be a little more careful on the muddy downhills.

Question: Did you have to go back and find your shoe after the race?
Corrigan: Somebody found it and brought it to me.

Question: Has that ever happened before?
Corrigan: Not to me, but I know plenty of people who it has happened to. I didn’t think the course was going to be that muddy, but we’ll just tie them tighter next time.

Question: What do you like about the course of Panorama Farms?
Corrigan: I like that it’s hilly and it’s not boring. You don’t do the same part twice ever and it’s broken up into different areas. You start in one section where it’s hilly then you go to a more woodsy area.

Question: What brought you to UVa?
Corrigan: A lot of things. It was a really good academic school with a lot of choices, I didn’t know what I wanted to do at the time, so that was the main draw. It was close to home but had a lot going on, it had a really good athletics program. It was overall the best package for me.

Question: What is your favorite part of UVa outside of the cross country/track and field program?
Corrigan: How pretty Charlottesville is.

Question: Why would you recommend UVa to prospective cross country/track and field athletes?
Corrigan: This is the prettiest place I’ve ever run. We have more trails than I’ve seen anywhere else and the farms we run on are a great place to run. Plus, we have a great team so from a track and field stand point, it’s a great place to be.

Question: Where do you see yourself a few years after graduation?
Corrigan: I want to be doing water systems engineering, but I still want to be running. I would also like to run a marathon at some point.

Question: What are you goals for the upcoming ACC Championships?
Corrigan: As a team, just go for the win. I think we’re better than we’ve ever been since I’ve been here as a team so I’m excited about that. As an individual, I want to be as high up as I can be, hopefully All-ACC.
