CHARLOTTESVILLE — The 2011 ITA Atlantic Regional continued Friday with with first day of main draw play at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers had one singles player and one doubles team advance with first round wins.

Santiago Villegas (Bogota, Colombia) opened singles play with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Taylor Sargent of George Mason. He joins six other Cavaliers in round of 64 who are seeds and had a first round bye. Virginia has seven players in the main draw, including six seeds. The top-seed is Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.), the two-time defending champion. Drew Courtney (Clifton, Va.) is the No. 2 seed, Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala) is the No. 5 seed and Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) is the No. 6 seed. Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) and Philippe Oudshoorn (Apeldoorn, The Netherlands) also will start play on Saturday.

In doubles, the team of Villegas and Shane were the only team to compete, scoring an 8-6 win over the James Madison team of Hugo Ramadier and Greg Vladimirsky. They join three other Cavalier teams in the round of 32. Third-seeded Courtney and Uriguen, fourth-seeded Jenkins and Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.), and seventh-seeded Rooda and Oudshoorn all had first round byes.

The tournament continues Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center with the round of 64 and 32 of singles and the round of 32 of doubles. Play begins at 9 a.m., and admission is free.
