Women's Tennis Has Five Quarterfinalists at ITA Atlantic Regional

NORFOLK, Va. — The Virginia women’s tennis team continued its strong play at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Sunday at Old Dominion University. The Cavaliers had five singles players and two doubles teams reach the quarterfinals during the fourth day of the tournament.
Five Cavaliers won a pair of singles matches on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals. Second-seeded Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) had two straight-set wins over Maria Voscekova of Marshall and Marlen Mesgarzadeh of William & Mary. She next plays eighth-seeded Petra Januskova of Penn State. Fourth-seeded Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) advanced with wins over Maria Belaya of William & Mary and Josefin Hjertquist of VCU. She plays Cristina Stancu of Maryland in the quarterfinals. Fifth-seeded Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) defeated Dominika Zaprazna of Marshall and Alex Bara of VCU. She plays Lauren Greco of Georgetown in the quarterfinals, who upset top-seeded Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) in the round of 16. The fourth quarterfinal is an all-Virginia matchup of seventh-seeded Li Xi (Kunming, China) and 15th-seeded Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.). Xi defeated Marie Bedard of Penn State and Ana Belzunce of Maryland. Peretz topped Tina Tehrani of Georgetown before upsetting third-seeded Kayla Rizzolo of William & Mary.
Two Virginia doubles teams, the top two seeds, won round of 16 matches on Sunday. Top-seeded Hardenbergh and Vierra won 8-1 over Mimi Hamling and Zoe Krohn of George Washington. Second-seeded Tomljanovic and Fraser won 8-4 over Martha Blakely and Courtney Rauscher of Virginia Tech.
The tournament runs through Tuesday at Old Dominion.
