Virginia Heads to Clemson for ACC Championships Saturday

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia men’s and women’s cross country teams travel to Musser Farms in Clemson, S.C., for the 2011 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships on Saturday (Oct. 29). The men’s 8k race will start at 10:00 a.m., followed by the women’s 6k competition at 11:00 a.m.

The Virginia women come in ranked 17th nationally by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), one of five ACC women’s teams ranked in the top 30. Florida State is ranked first, while NC State is 21st, North Carolina is right behind at No. 22 and Boston College comes in at 24th.

Three men’s squads are ranked in the USTFCCCA’s top 30, with Florida State and NC State at No. 18 and 19, respectively, while North Carolina is tabbed 30th. UVa’s men are ranked seventh in the Southeast Region, right behind Virginia Tech.

The Cavaliers are coming off a sweep of the Panorama Farms Invitational, where four ‘Hoos earned top-five finishes on Oct. 14.

In the men’s race senior Mark Amirault (Walpole, Mass.) and sophomore Chris Foley (Chantilly, Va.) placed second and third, respectively, while in the women’s heat, junior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Chelsea Ley (Woolwich Township, N.J.) crossed the line third and fourth, respectively.

At last year’s conference meet in Boston, Florida State swept the team titles, capturing its first-ever ACC men’s championship and its third-straight women’s title.
