GUADALAJARA, Mexico – Virginia field hockey players Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese each scored in Team USA’s 4-2 upset of world No. 1 Argentina to claim the gold medal at the Pan American Games Friday and punch a ticket to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

“We couldn’t be more excited for the USA hockey team,” UVa head coach Michele Madison said. “Paige’s goal in the opening minutes provided an early lead and Michelle’s goal to secure the win was just fantastic.”

The Americans shocked Argentina with two early goals, including Selenski’s first goal of the game in the 12th minute. Vittese secured the win with the team’s fourth goal in the 66th.

Argentina had never lost a game in Pan American play since the sport was included in 1987. The U.S. is ranked 13th.

The 2012 Olympic Games will be contested July 27 through Aug. 12.
