Virginia Wins Two Races at Princeton Chase

PRINCETON, N.J.-The Virginia rowing team continued its fall schedule with two wins Sunday (Oct. 30) at the Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie. UVa’s Varsity Eights finished first, ninth, 10th and 22nd, while the Novice Eights placed first and 10th.

“I knew Princeton was going to bring it on their home course and respond after the Head of the Charles,” head coach Kevin Sauer said. “After 2,000 meters, we had only gained a half second but we were able to close on them in the second half of the race and did a nice job to get the win.”

The Cavaliers’ A boat completed the 2.75-mile course in a time of 14:35.17, over eight seconds faster than second-place Princeton (14:34.62). It was UVa’s second win of season after winning the Championship Eights at the Head of the Charles on Oct. 23.

Virginia’s B and C boats defeated 39 vessels each, including many schools’ top boat, finishing in 15:29.56 and 15:32.29. The ‘Hoos’ fourth boat placed 22nd in a time of 16:09.16.

In the Novice Eights, UVa rowed its way to a 25-second victory in a time of 16:05.40 and the Cavaliers’ second boat placed 10th in 17:29.77. Cornell’s novices finished second in 16:30.76.

“The first-years have been doing well all fall and are a really talented group,” Sauer said.

49 boats competed in the Varsity Eights, while 18 took part in the Novice Eights.

Virginia concludes its fall schedule on Sunday, Nov. 13 with the Rivanna Romp.
