Virginia Golfers Finish Fourth at The Gifford Collegiate

San Martin, CA – The Virginia men’s golf team finished fourth at the 11-team Gifford Collegiate in San Martin, Calif. The tournament was UVa’s final event of the fall season.

The Cavaliers shot 16-over 371 Tuesday using a play-six, count-five format. Virginia finished at 1093, eight shots behind No. 2 Oregon. USC won the tourney at 1057 while No. 10 UCLA was second at 1061. UVa placed ahead of No. 3 Washington (1094) and No. 5 Stanford (1107).

Freshman Denny McCarthy led the Cavaliers during the final round with a 2-under 69. He placed fifth overall at 1-under 212. It marked the third time in four tournaments this year he has placed in the top-10.

Ben Kohles posted a score of 77 during the third round to drop back to 17th at 217. Freshman Ji Soo Park was 23rd at 219. He shot 75 in the final round. Bruce Woodall was 25th at 22, Mac McLaughlin was 44th at 226 and Ben Rusch was 50th at 228. Woodall shot 78 Tuesday while McLaughlin finished with a 74 and Rusch carded a final round of 76.

USC’s Steve Lim took medalist honors at 11-under 202.

Virginia opens its spring season March 5 at the Cleveland Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C.
