CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The men’s and women’s Virginia cross country teams compete in the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships Saturday at E.P. Tom Sawyer State Park in Louisville, Ky. The men’s 10K race will start at 10:00 a.m., while the women’s 6K run begins at 11:15 a.m.

The No. 21 Cavalier women are the defending champions and are looking to win the Southeast Region for the third time in four years. ACC rivals NC State (No. 20) and North Carolina (25th) are the only other schools ranked in the Top-30.

The ‘Hoos tied for third at the 2011 ACC Championships, led by junior Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.), who earned All-ACC honors with a 14th-place finish.

The Cavalier men will look to upset four nationally-ranked teams, including No. 14 NC State, No. 20 Eastern Kentucky, No. 25 North Carolina and No. 26 Louisville.

Senior Mark Amirault (Walpole, Mass.) led the ‘Hoos across the line with a third-place finish at the ACC Championships, earning an All-ACC nod. Virginia placed sixth at the conference meet.

The top-two teams and top-four individuals at each of the eight regional meets will automatically advance to the NCAA Championships to be held in Terre Haute, Ind., on Monday, Nov. 21. Thirteen teams will also earn an at-large bid, to be announced on Sunday, Nov. 13.
