CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia director of track and field/cross country Jason Vigilante has been named the Southeast Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second straight year and third time in four years, as announced by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This is Vigilante’s eighth honor by the organization and fourth as a head coach.

“This award goes to the young ladies who have worked so hard and competed so well for the University of Virginia,” Vigilante said. “It’s an honor to be recognized and I’m grateful.”

Vigilante guided the Cavaliers to their third NCAA Southeast Regional Championship in four years last Saturday (Nov. 12), when they outpaced ACC rival NC State, 107-113. Seniors Morgane Gay and Anna Corrigan and sophomore Chelsea Ley all earned All-Southeast Region honors, with Gay crossing the line third overall.

Vigilante has been tabbed the Southeast Region Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year three times (2008, 2010, 2011) and also garnered 2009 Southeast Region Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors from the USTFCCCA as a head coach. At the conference level, he was named the ACC Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Coach of the Year in 2009 and the ACC Men’s Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2008.

Prior to coming to Virginia, Vigilante, while an assistant at Texas, was honored by the USTFCCCA as the 2008 National Assistant Indoor Coach of the Year and the South Central Region Coach of the Year. In 2005, he was named the National Assistant Outdoor Coach of the Year and the Midwest Regional Coach of the Year for distance.

Indiana State will host the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships on Monday, November 21, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Ind.

The men’s race will begin at approximately 12:08 p.m. ET, followed by the women’s race at approximately 12:58 p.m. A live webcast of the championships will be broadcast from noon to 1:30 p.m. ET on In addition, highlights from the championships will be included as part of the CBS NCAA Fall Seasonal Show scheduled to air on Saturday, December 18, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. ET on CBS HD.
