CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Cavaliers men’s lacrosse team will travel west to contest Penn in Inside Lacrosse’s inaugural Mile High Classic on April 27. The game will be played at Sports Authority Field at Mile High, home of the NFL’s Denver Broncos. The doubleheader event begins with UVa and Penn will at 5:30 p.m. MST, followed by Denver and Duke at 8 p.m. MST, concluding the Friday evening event.

“We are very excited to have been asked to be a part of this inaugural Mile High Classic,” said Virginia head coach Dom Starsia. “We have worked closely with Inside Lacrosse in the past and this promises to be a terrific event. Four great teams, top-notch venue, dynamic location, prominent media presence – there is a lot to like here for fans of our sport. Everyone is talking about the overall growth of our game and this Mile High Classic reflects both the potential and the quality of experience for fans and participants.”

The trip will be Virginia’s second-ever visit to the state of Colorado and the city of Denver. The Cavaliers first made the journey to the Mile-High city early in the 2004 season, facing Air Force and Denver on the campus of the University of Denver.

The Mile High Classic is the third lacrosse event that Inside Lacrosse has hosted and UVa has been part of each inaugural event. Inside Lacrosse started hosting lacrosse events in NFL stadiums in 2007 when it instituted the Face-Off Classic at Baltimore’s M&T Bank Stadium. UVa played in the first two Face-Off Classics before moving on to the Inaugural Big City Classic the Old Meadowlands in 2009. UVa was part of the first-ever event at MetLife Stadium during the 2010 Big City Classic and returned to the Face-Off Classic in 2011. The 2012 season will mark the first time UVa will play in two Inside Lacrosse events, as the Cavaliers are scheduled to face Cornell on March 10 in the 2012 Face-Off Classic.

UVa features two Colorado natives on its 2012 roster, Tanner Ottenbreit (Parker, Colo.) and Rhody Heller (Denver, Colo.). The Cavaliers also signed two more as part of the 2012 recruiting class announced on Nov. 16. Matt Florence (Greenwood, Colo.) and Tanner Scales (Colo.) signed national letters of intent for the 2012-013 academic year.
