ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Briggy Imbriglia took eighth on the platform as competition at the Georgia Diving Invitational concluded Thursday in Athens, Ga.

“Although we didn’t place as high as I would have liked, many of the divers were competing with some new and more difficult dives,” UVa diving coach Rich MacDonald said. “Briggy was the highlight of the competition, making finals on all three levels. Overall, we can take a lot of positive things from Athens. We know where we need to focus. We now have to buckle down and work hard over the next seven weeks.”

Imbriglia earned a score of 309.50 to place eighth, the highest UVa finish of the meet. Freshman JB Kolod was 21st overall with a mark of 235.90.

Freshman Laura Gartrell was the highest finisher for the women on the platform, placing 14th (190.00). Sophomore Kelly Lloyd recorded a 17th-place performance (170.90) while classmate Carlin Tettelbach was 20th (152.55).

Imbriglia finaled for the second consecutive day en route to an 11th-place finish on the 1-meter board. He earned a mark of 286.25 in the finals after registering a score of 278.20 during the preliminaries. Kolod was 25th overall after he registered a mark of 235.95.

Lloyd was the women’s top finisher on the 3-meter board, tallying a mark of 197.45 to place 18th. Tettelbach (187.90) and Gartrell (169.25) were 25th and 27th, respectively.

On day one of the invitational, Imbriglia led the Cavaliers with an 11th-place finish on the 3-meter board after posting a score of 299.95. He registered a mark of 309.20 in the preliminaries. Kolod was 16th overall, earning a score of 266.60 in the finals and a mark of 286.70 in the preliminaries.

Gartrell paced the Virginia women, earning a finals berth on the 1-meter. She placed 16th overall with a score of 192.40 and received a mark of 223.50 in the preliminares. Lloyd (190.35) and Tettelbach (178.35) were 22nd and 25th, respectively.

Virginia is back in action when the Cavaliers travel to Virginia Tech Wednesday (Jan. 11) for a 6 p.m. dual meet with the Hokies.
