The Virginia rowing team takes an annual training trip to Florida in preparation for the spring season. This year, a different senior will check in each day with VirginiaSports.com to give insight to how the trip is going. Tuesday’s (Jan. 10) entry is from MacKenzie Leahy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.).
Good Afternoon! (and that it is), I am writing from Daytona Beach! Escaping the paradise we all know so well as Hontoon Landing. By the looks of everyone’s hands and the fact that I got in the shower yesterday with my shoes still on, it’s nice to have a break.
So here we are on our blessed, yet well-deserved afternoon off! If you’ve been following the team’s daily updates you are well aware of what our coaches define as “productive.” Today’s morning practice consisted of ten-minute pieces for the eights, a range of five- to 12-minute pieces for the fours, and the daily circuit/run combo to finish practice. I think I can speak for the team on this one and say we’d all agree, today was the definition of PRODUCTIVE.
After practice, we made our way into civilization, traveling by bus on the International Speedway, (Don’t worry avid followers! Alan, our bus driver took it easy this time!) and we were dropped off for the day. Half the team loaded up with SPF and headed to the beach. Sandcastles were built, books were read, and kites were flown by our very own Cara Linnenkohl (tomorrow’s official reporter). While these fun activities occurred, others scoured the scene for caffeine and a movie. I took the movie route and saw The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and honestly, I still don’t know how I feel about it. After the movie, a bunch of us went to Johnny Rockets and stuffed our faces, where our waitress and her co-workers showed off their moves to “Last Dance.” And NOW it is 8 o’clock and I’ve never been this happy to be in my bed! (…until tomorrow night, ha!)
Check out some photos I have taken this week here, so you can feel involved while simultaneously feeling our pain.
I hope this brief summary has left you feeling enlightened!
