Women's Tennis Continues Play at UVa Winter Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s tennis team continued play on Sunday at the seventh annual UVa Winter Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, the first event of the spring season. The Cavaliers won three singles matches against Alabama on day two of the event.
Play concludes on Monday with Virginia playing matches against Wake Forest at 10:30 a.m. Utah and Alabama will play matches beginning at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
On Sunday, 30th-ranked Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) defeated No. 13 Mary Anne Macfarlane 6-3, 7-6(5) in Flight A. Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) also won in straight sets, in Flight D and Flight E respectively.
Out west at the National College Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, two Cavaliers concluded play in the singles and doubles finals. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) won the doubles title, defeating Danielle Lao and Alison Ramos of USC 8-5 in the semifinals and Noel Scott and Lina Padegimaite of Texas 8-4 in the final. In the singles final, Fraser fell to Lao 7-6, 6-0.
Virginia opens the dual match season on Feb. 21 as it faces No. 18 Tennessee at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
