Virginia Men and Women Pick Up Victories at Duke
DURHAM, N.C. – The Virginia men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams each picked up a dual meet victory Friday at Duke. The Cavalier men earned a 155-140 win over the Blue Devils while the women also came out on top, 154-131.
The 12th-ranked Virginia men (3-2, 2-0 ACC) swept three races against Duke. Sophomore Bradley Phillips led a sweep in the 1000 freestyle with a winning time of 9:29.56. Teammates Serge Gould (9:30.93) and Nathan Vredeveld (9:33.80) placed second and third, respectively.
Virginia also went 1-2-3 in the 200 butterfly. Freshman David Ingraham won the event in 1:49.91 and was followed by teammates Matt Houser (1:52.90) and Nathan Hart (1:53.00).
The Cavaliers had a solid showing in the 500 freestyle as Parker Camp led the way with a winning time of 4:32.91. He was followed by teammates David Karasek (4:37.99) and Jonathan Buerger (4:41.09).
Senior Peter Geissinger won the 200 freestyle in 1:39.73 and was followed by sophomore Jan Daniec in second with a time of 1:42.20. Parker Camp also picked up a victory in the 100 backstroke in 50.52; he was followed by Jack Murfee in second (50.86).
Freshman JB Kolod led the Cavalier divers with a victory on the 1-meter board after earning a mark of 316.95.
The 200 medley relay team of Camp, Taylor Grey, Jake Pearce and Tom Barrett earned first-place honors (1:32.93) while Murfee, Karasek, Ivan Capan and Geissinger placed second (1:32.94) in the event.
Five Virginia sweeps helped lead the 11th-ranked Cavalier women (5-0, 2-0 ACC) to a victory over the Blue Devils.
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the 1000 freestyle after freshman Alison Haulsee touched in a winning time of 10:00.91. She was followed by Hillary Petersen (10:04.45) in second and Kelly Grant (10:08.15) in third.
UVa also swept the 200 freestyle. Sophomore Rachel Naurath took top honors in 1:50.29 while Kelly Offut (1:51.22) placed second and Meredith Perdue (1:51.75) was third.
Redshirt freshman Megan Fox led a trio of Cavaliers in the 200 butterfly, earning the victory in 2:01.76. She was followed by Riley Flanagan (2:03.76) in second and Shaun Casey (2:04.16), who took third.
Virginia earned another sweep in the 100 freestyle, led by senior Kelly Flynn’s winning time of 50.74. Caroline Kenney was second in 51.81 and Emily Lloyd placed third in 52.27.
The 200 breaststroke also proved solid for the Cavalier women after Christine Olson touched first with a winning time of 2:18.54. Fox was second (2:22.12) while Petersen took third (2:24.21).
Sophomore Charlotte Clarke picked up a victory in the 100 backstroke (55.92) while freshman Ellen Williamson took top honors in the 200 backstroke (2:00.90). Kelly Offutt also earned a win in the 500 freestyle, touching in 4:55.94.
Naurath (100 butterfly, 56.45) and Petersen (400 individual medley, 4:22.62) also posted winning times in events that were exhibitioned.
Clarke, Flynn, Emily Dicus and Lloyd were the top finishers for the Cavaliers in the 200 medley relay, the first event of the night, placing second in 1:44.02.
Both Virginia squads are slated to compete at North Carolina Saturday. The men will take on the Tar Heels at 12 p.m. while the women’s meet will begin at 3 p.m. in Chapel Hill, N.C.
