FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – The ninth-ranked Virginia women’s tennis team opened its 2012 season with a 4-3 win over No. 18 Tennessee on Saturday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. The Lady Vols (0-1) took the early lead by winning the doubles point. Joanna Henderson and Kata Szekely defeated Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) 8-2 at No. 3 to give Tennessee the early edge. The 18th-ranked duo of Brynn Boren and Sarah Toti clinched the opening point for the Lady Vols with an 8-6 win at No. 2 over Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.). Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Li Xi (Kunming, China) closed out doubles play with an 8-6 win for the Cavaliers at No. 1 over Natalie Pluskota and Caitlyn Williams.
