CHARLOTTESVILLE – The nation’s top women’s tennis teams travel to Charlottesville this week as The Boar’s Head Sports Club hosts the 2012 ITA Women’s National Team Indoor Championships this Friday-Monday. It is the second consecutive year the club has hosted the prestigious 16-team event.

This year’s field consists of 16 of the top 23 teams in the nation. Joining host Virginia, currently ranked No. 9 nationally, is No. 3 Duke, No. 4 UCLA, No. 5 Baylor, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 California, No. 8 North Carolina, No. 10 Michigan, No. 11 Miami, No. 12 Northwestern, No. 13 Georgia Tech, No. 14 Texas, No. 15 Clemson, No. 16 USC, No. 17 Tennessee and No. 23 Mississippi.

Virginia enters the tournament with a 5-0 record this season, including wins over fellow-NTI participants Tennessee and Texas last month. It is the fourth National Team Indoor appearance for the Cavaliers. Last season, they upset No. 3 Baylor in the first round before falling to No. 6 Duke in the quarterfinals and topping Northwestern in the consolation bracket. Virginia also competed in the tournament in 1993 and 1994.

The Cavaliers are the No. 7 seed in this year’s tournament and open play against Northwestern on Friday at 6:30 p.m. During the first three days of the tournament, there will be two matches played at a time, starting at 9 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Monday’s final will start at 11 a.m.

Admission to the tournament is free.
