CHARLOTTESVILLE — The nation’s top men’s tennis teams travel to Charlottesville this week as The Boar’s Head Sports Club hosts the 2012 ITA Men’s National Team Indoor Championships this Friday-Monday. It is the second time the club has hosted the prestigious 16-team event, having also hosted the tournament in 2010.

The Cavaliers are the No. 2 seed in this year’s tournament and open play against Auburn on Friday at 6:30 p.m. During the first three days of the tournament, there will be two matches played at a time, starting at 9 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:30 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. Monday’s final will start at 12 p.m.

Admission to the tournament is free.

This year’s field consists of 16 of the top 20 teams in the nation, including the top 14 teams in the current ITA rankings. Joining host Virginia, currently ranked No. 2 nationally, is No. 1 USC, No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Georgia, No. 5 Florida, No. 6 Kentucky, No. 7 Baylor, No. 8 UCLA, No. 9 Stanford, No. 10 Duke, No. 11 Texas A&M, No. 12 Pepperdine, No. 13 California, No. 14 Texas, No. 16 Auburn and No. 20 Tennessee.

Virginia enters the tournament with a 5-0 record this season, including wins over fellow-NTI participants Texas, Florida and Texas A&M earlier this month.

It is the eighth consecutive National Team Indoor appearance for the Cavaliers, as only Georgia and UCLA have longer current streaks. Virginia is looking for its unprecedented fifth consecutive National Team Indoor Championship. Last season the Cavaliers became the first team in the 37-year history of the event to win four straight titles. Only Stanford (12) and UCLA (7) have more overall championships than Virginia.
