CHARLOTTESVILLE – The sixth-ranked Virginia women’s lacrosse team came away with a 12-9 victory over visiting Richmond on Wednesday (Feb. 22) at Klöckner Stadium. Four different Cavaliers had two goals apiece for the Cavaliers.

Josie Owen (Gibson Island, Md.) and Liza Blue (Butler, Md.) each scored two goals and added an assist for Virginia, which improved to 2-0 on the season.

The loss dropped Richmond’s record to 0-3.

Julie Gardner (Severna Park, Md.) also had a three-point night for Virginia, scoring a goal and adding two assists. Charlie Finnigan (Twickenham, Middlesex, England) and Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.) tacked on two goals apiece for UVa.

The Cavaliers out-shot the Spiders, 35-22, and held a 14-9 advantage in draw controls.

Junior goalkeeper Kim Kolarik (Riva, Md.) finished with eight saves between the pipes for UVa.

Richmond struck first, as Mary Flowers found Caitlin Fifield for the game’s first goal at the 27:06 mark. From there, Virginia rattled off six-consecutive goals to take a 6-1 lead on a Loizeaux goal with 5:24 left in the half. Richmond then went on a run of its own, scoring three-straight to pull to within 6-4 at halftime.

Finnigan opened the second-half scoring for Virginia, scoring back-to-back goals at 27:50 and 21:21. Freshman Sloan Warren (Philadelphia, Pa.) connected on her first-career goal at the 8:54 mark and Blue and Ainsley Baker (Corning, N.Y.) added insurance goals for the ‘Hoos in the final minutes.

The 12-9 victory was Virginia’s sixth-straight vs. Richmond.

Virginia is back in action at Klöckner Stadium on Sunday, Feb. 26 vs. Syracuse. The game is scheduled to begin at noon, and former Cavalier Robyn Nye Wood’s No. 24 will be retired during a halftime ceremony.
