CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia junior goalkeeper Kim Kolarik (Riva, Md.) was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced on Tuesday (Feb. 28). Kolarik posted 18 saves and nine ground balls in a 2-0 week for the sixth-ranked Cavaliers that included victories over Richmond and then-No. 12 Syracuse.

Kolarik had 10 saves and five ground balls against the Orange in the Cavaliers’ 9-7 victory on Sunday (Feb. 26). She made two big saves in the second half during a 12-minute stretch where the Cavaliers held the Orange scoreless and made two saves from point-blank range in the last 5:40 to preserve the UVa win.

Kolarik added eight saves and four ground balls in UVa’s 12-9 victory over Richmond on Wednesday (Feb. 22).

The Defensive Player of the Week honor is the first of Kolarik’s career.

North Carolina sophomore Abbey Friend was named ACC Offensive Player of the Week.

Virginia hits the road for the first time this season with a game at No. 3 Maryland on Friday (March 2) at 7 p.m. The road trip continues with a Sunday (March 4) game at Penn State that is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
