Charlottesville, VA – The Virginia men’s golf team opens its spring season Monday at the 15th annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the historic Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. The event runs through Tuesday with two rounds scheduled for the first day of play followed by a single round. The 6,617-yard, par-70 Palmetto Golf Club was founded in 1892 and it is recognized as the fourth oldest golf course in the United States.

Virginia’s lineup will feature Ben Kohles, Denny McCarthy, Ben Rusch, Ji Soo Park and Bruce Woodall. McCarthy led the Cavaliers in the fall with a 71.83 stroke average while Kohles was second at 72.18. McCarthy, a freshman, tied or led the team in scoring in all four fall tournaments.

In addition to the host school USC Aiken, this year’s field includes Akron, Augusta State, Chattanooga, Clemson, College of Charleston, East Carolina, Elon, Francis Marion, Furman, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Maryland, Presbyterian, South Carolina, Wofford and Vanderbilt.

Virginia finished second at last year’s tournament as Rusch led the team with a ninth-place finish. In 2010 Ben Kohles won the event by shooting 205, including a 7-under 63 in the first round to tie the Cavaliers’ single-round scoring record.
