CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Six members of the Virginia field hockey team were honored this week by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) after being placed on the Division I National Academic Squad.

Among UVa’s honorees were freshman Jess Orrett (Somerset, England) and redshirt freshman Elizabeth Hanks (Hummelstown, Pa.); sophomores Lane Smith (Ottawa Hills, Ohio), Katie Robinson (Mount Joy, Pa.) and Sallie Seiy (Martinsville, Va.) and junior Phoebe Willis (Fredericksburg, Va).

Additionally, Virginia joined Duke as the only two schools from the Atlantic Coast Conference to receive the NFHCA’s National Academic Team Award, which recognizes those institutions that have achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or higher during the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.

“The National Academic Team Award is a program goal,” head coach Michele Madison said. “More than half of the team members scoring over a 3.0 with the rigorous academics at The University of Virginia is exemplary. I am very proud of their commitment to their education.”

It is the second career honor for Hanks, Smith, Robinson and Willis and the first for Orrett and Seiy.

The National Academic Squad recognizes those student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2011-12 academic year.
