GREENSBORO, N.C.-The No. 1 Virginia rowing team’s first Varsity Eight has been named the ACC’s first Crew of the Week for 2012, the conference announced Wednesday (March 21).

The crew of coxswain Sidney Thorsten (Atlanta, Ga.), Keziah Bell (Bainbridge, Island, Wash.), Martha Kuzzy (Minneapolis, Minn.), Kristine O’Brien (Massapequa Park, N.Y.), Sarah Cowburn (Reddicth, England), Brandy Herald (Portland, Ore.), Susanne Grainger (London, Ontario, Canada), Morgan Joseph (Ellicott City, Md.) and Kaitlin Fanikos (Boston, Mass.) won three races last weekend at the Oak Ridge Invitational.

In the first race on Saturday (March 17) morning, the Cavaliers finished in a time of 6:22.60 and defeated No. 18 Tennessee by more than 18 seconds (6:40.94). UVa posted a time of 6:18.10 in the afternoon session, taking down Louisville and Jacksonville. The Cavaliers wrapped up the weekend with their fastest time of 6:14.50 in a win over Duke and Minnesota on Sunday.

Virginia takes on Old Dominion in a scrimmage on March 24 at the Rivanna Reservoir before traveling across the country to take part in the San Diego Crew Classic March 31-April 1.
