CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (16-11, 3-2 ACC) was topped by No. 23 Florida State (28-5, 5-0 ACC) in a doubleheader Saturday at The Park. The Cavaliers were shut out 5-0 and 2-0.

In game one, junior pitcher Melanie Mitchell (White Plains, Md.) recorded 11 strikeouts and allowed just one earned run in the 5-0 setback. She gave up seven hits and finished with two walks.

The Cavaliers were outhit 7-1 in the first game. Freshman Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) tallied the lone hit, a single to right in the third inning.

The game was scoreless through five complete innings until the Seminoles put up three runs in the top half of the sixth, highlighted by a leadoff home run from Kirstin Austin. After a Virginia error, Shayla Jackson doubled and Briana Hamilton hit a two-out triple. Florida State added two more runs in the top of the seventh.

Redshirt junior Monica Perry improved to 12-2 on the year with the win in the circle for the Seminoles. She had six strikeouts in her one-hit shutout performance.

Florida State put up two runs in the top of the fourth inning of game two.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Gillen (Wilminton, Del.) threw all seven innings and did not allow an earned run while giving up five hits. She also finished with five strikeouts and four walks.

Sophomore Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a bunt single in the bottom of the fifth for Virginia’s only hit.

FSU’s Kelly Hensley hit a two-out two-RBI double in the fourth inning, which proved to be the difference. Freshman pitcher Lacey Waldrop struck out 10 with one walk in the complete game shutout.

The Cavaliers and Seminoles conclude the series at 11 a.m. Sunday at The Park.
