CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (16-12, 3-3 ACC) was swept by No. 23 Florida State (29-5, 6-0 ACC) after the Seminoles earned a 3-1 victory Sunday in the series finale at The Park.

The Cavaliers were outhit 8-4 in the contest. Florida State put up a run in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Virginia was led at the plate by sophomore Erica Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.), who tripled. Senior Giannina Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) and freshman Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) also singled.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Gillen (Wilmington, Del.) took the loss after throwing the complete game. She struck out four and walked one.

The Seminoles scored in the top of the third inning when Erika Leonard homered to right field to lead off the stanza.

The Cavaliers responded in the bottom of the fourth. Erica Cipolloni led off with a triple to right and scored on Marcy Bowdren’s (Fairfax Station, Va.) sacrifice flyout to left.

Florida State then put up a run in the fifth. Leonard, who was 3-for-3 on the day, doubled to center and Morgan Bullock came on to punch run. She moved to third on a groundout and scored on Kirstin Austin’s single through the left side.

The Seminoles added a run in the seventh. Courtney Senas led off with an infield single and with one out, Leonard doubled to put runners on second and third. Senas came home on Kelly Hensley’s sacrifice fly.

Florida State freshman Lacey Waldrop earned the win after throwing the final four innings. She did not allow a run on two hits with three strikeouts. Redshirt junior Monica Perry tossed the first three innings, gave up two hits, struck out five and walked one.

Virginia continues ACC play at Boston College Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
