Awendaw, SC – The 24th-ranked Virginia men’s golf team posted the best final round score at the Hootie @ Bulls Bay Intercollegiate to finish second in the 15-team field. The Cavaliers shot 1-under 287 Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 1-under 863. Auburn, ranked fifth in the nation, took top honors at 10-under 854. The Tigers’ 6-over 294 Tuesday was the next best score to Virginia’s performance.

The Cavaliers were led Tuesday by freshman Denny McCarthy, who shot 3-under 69 to finish in fifth place at 2-under 214. McCarthy was the only player in the field to shoot in the 60s during the final round. It was the fourth top-10 finish during his freshman campaign and marked the fifth time this season he has led or shared the team lead in scoring.

Ben Kohles and Ben Rusch both tied for 12th place at 2-over 218 for the Cavaliers. Kohles shot 2-over 74 Tuesday while Rusch posted a round of even par 72. Bruce Woodall also finished with a 72 to move up to 23rd place at 220. Ji Soo Park shot 78 and completed play in 34th position at 224.

Auburn’s Niclas Carlsson took medalist honors by a single stroke at 5-under 211.

The tournament marks the fifth time this year Virginia has won or been the runner-up at a tournament. The Cavaliers are off until April 7 when they travel to Tampa, Fla., for the Gary Koch Invitational, the team’s final regular season event
