Athens, GA – The Virginia women’s golf team moved up one spot to finish fourth at the 40th annual Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic held in Athens, Ga. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 289 during Sunday’s final around for a 54-hole total of 9-over 873. Second-ranked Alabama won the 18-team tournament at 10-under 854. No. 9 Georgia was second at 866 and No. 17 Florida was third at 867.

The Cavaliers, ranked No. 30 in the current Golfstat rankings, finished above five other teams currently ranked higher than them in the standings.

Junior Brittany Altomare led Virginia by tying for sixth place at 3-under 213. She shot even par 72 during the final round. It was the 12th top-10 finish during her career and the fourth this season. Her performance also marked the sixth time in seven outings this year she has led the team in scoring.

Freshman Briana Mao was UVa’s next highest finisher, also shooting 72 during the final round to place 18th at 2-over 218. That bettered her previous best tournament score this season by 12 strokes.

Elizabeth Brightwell also carded a 72 Sunday and was 23rd at 5-over 221. Her finish was the best of her career. Portland Rosen placed 33rd at 223 and Lauren Greenlief was 66th at 231.

Alabama’s Jennifer Kirby took medalist honors by a stroke at 7-under 209.

The Cavaliers travel to Greensboro, N.C. next weekend to compete in the Bryan National Collegiate April 6-8 in their final regular season tournament of the season.
