FARMVILLE, Va. – The Virginia softball team (19-14) split a doubleheader Tuesday at Longwood in Farmville, Va. The Cavaliers won the first game 2-0 before falling in game two, 3-0.

Virginia tallied seven hits in game one, led by two singles from senior Giannina Cipolloni (Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.). Junior Alex Skinkis (La Palma, Calif.) had a two-RBI single and classmate Kristen Hawkins (Elizabeth, Pa.) doubled. Sophomore Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) also singled for Virginia.

The next batter, Taylor Williams (Woodbridge, Va.), sacrificed Byxbee to third and Cipolloni to second before Skinkis hit both runners in with a single to right centerfield.

Williams, Bowdren and Byxbee all singled for the Cavaliers.

Freshman pitcher Rachel Gillen (Wilmington, Del.) took the loss in the circle. She threw six innings and struck out two with two walks.

Longwood’s Ashley Cornell picked up the win with a three-hit shutout. She struck out five and walked one.
