GREENSBORO, N.C.-The No. 1 Virginia rowing team’s first Varsity Four has been named ACC Crew of the Week after winning the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup at the 39th edition of the San Diego Crew Classic on April 1, the conference announced Wednesday (April 4).

The first V4 crew of coxswain Molly Frear (Wilton, Conn.), Ruth Retzinger (Cincinnati, Ohio), Kaity McCullough (Campbell, Calif.), Elle Murray (Tampa, Fla.) and Chandler Lally (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) won the grand final in a time of 7:58.12 to win the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup over No. 6 USC, No. 8 Washington and No. 14 Washington State, UCLA and Tennessee.

On Saturday, the same crew captured its heat in a time of 7:37.64, besting UCLA by 0.13 to reach the grand final. The Cavaliers also defeated British Columbia, Clemson, USC’s second boat, Oklahoma and San Diego State in the heat.

This is the second weekly award this season for UVa. The first Varsity Eight was named ACC Crew of the Week on March 21.

The Cavaliers return to action April 14-15 for the UVa Invitational on Lake Monticello before heading to Clemson, S.C., for the ACC Championships on April 21.
