Cavalier Women's Tennis Tops Georgia Tech 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE – The No. 13 Virginia women’s tennis team posted its third straight win with a 6-1 victory over No. 25 Georgia Tech Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center. The Cavaliers improved to 15-4 overall, 6-2 in the ACC, while the Yellow Jackets fell to 9-10 overall, 3-5 in the conference.
“I am extremely proud of the team,” said head coach Mark Guilbeau. “We have been through a rough stretch recently, faced some adversity, and this team has worked very hard to overcome that. I saw it today in how we made the right adjustments in each match and put it all together at the key moments. It a great sign for what is to come later in the season.”
Virginia opened the match by taking the doubles point. Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.) downed Lynn Blau and Elizabeth Kilborn 8-5 at the No. 2 position. Georgia Tech drew even as Christina Ngo and Murial Wacker topped Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) 8-4 at No. 3 doubles. With the opening point on the line, Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) posted an 8-6 win at No. 1 over the 10th-ranked Yellow Jacket duo of Jillian O’Neill and Alex Anghelescu.
In singles, the Cavaliers doubled their lead as Tomljanovic cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kilborn at the No. 3 spot. Vierra followed with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 over Ngo to extend the lead to 3-0. Fraser clinched the win as she completed a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Lilley at the No. 2 position. It was Fraser’s 100th career singles win, making her the third Cavalier women’s player to accomplish the feat. She joins her classmate Hardenbergh (122 wins) and Alison Cohen (107 wins, 1993-96).
Virginia won two of the final three matches on the courts to make the final score 6-1. Peretz posted a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Anghelescu before Jasmine Minor downed Fuccillo 6-1, 7-6(4) at No. 6 for the Yellow Jackets’ lone point. Hardenbergh closed out the match with her 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win at No. 1 over O’Neill.
The victory secured Virginia’s third consecutive winning season in ACC play. The last time the Cavaliers accomplished that feat was a four-year stretch from 1981-84.
The Cavaliers conclude their home regular season schedule on Saturday when they host No. 24 Clemson at 1 p.m. Prior to the match there will be a senior day ceremony to honor Fraser and Hardenbergh. Admission is free to all home Virginia tennis matches.
